Palliative Care

Home visiting in the terminal stages of illness.

With the high proportion of elderly patients in Kapiti, the practice has extensive involvement in palliative care, in close co-operation with Mary Potter Hospice.  The practice is responsible for palliative care beds at a local hospital.

Urgent Care

Life threatening conditions

If you have severe chest pain or symptoms of a stroke or other life threatening condition, dial 111.

Immediate problems

If you need to be seen immediately, e.g for a fracture or laceration, just come to the surgery – if possible phone to let us know you are coming.

Same day problems

If you feel you need to be seen that day we will always fit you in, though we may only have time to deal with your immediate problem.  The nurse will make an initial assessment and you will then normally be seen by your usual doctor.

If you are acutely unwell please ring the surgery and ask to speak to the nurse who will make arrangements for you to be ushered to a room as soon as you arrive.

Home visits

Can be arranged if you are too unwell to attend the surgery. Please phone and speak to a nurse as early in the day as possible.

We undertake:

IV antibiotic therapy for infection, such as pneumonia or cellulitis

Urinary catheterisation

Instituting anticoagulation for DVT

Instituting anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation

Wound management

With the high proportion of elderly patients in Kapiti, our nurses are especially skilled in wound care management, including compression bandaging of leg wounds and ulcers.  We can assess circulation in the legs with Doppler ultrasound.

If you are planning to travel overseas, try to give us at least one month’s notice (some immunisations take time to work).  Phone the surgery for a Travel Health Consultation with the nurse.

We will get you to fill in a questionnaire about your travel plans and immunisation history; it would be helpful if you could download the questionnaire now and bring the completed form with you.

Also, before you come to your consultation, go to www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk and for each country you will be visiting, check the Malaria Map.  Note whether you will be visiting any High Risk or Low Risk areas.

If you need any other information about travel health we recommend www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk.
